Steam is giving game achievements a little overdue organization. Valve’s new “achievement sets” let developers divide a game’s achievements into separate groups, including sets for the base game and its downloadable content. Players still earn achievements by playing as usual; the change is to how they’re organized and displayed afterward.
Instead of presenting one long list, Steam will show achievements in developer-created sets, making it easier to see what you’ve completed and which related achievements remain. Each set gets its own progress bar. Finish one and you’ll earn a “set complete” trophy that appears on your Steam profile. It’s a modest quality-of-life change, but a welcome alternative to treating a game’s base campaign and every add-on as one sprawling checklist.
Valve also says developers can archive seasonal achievement sets. That could support achievements tied to seasons or limited-time holiday events, which developers may choose to retire when the relevant period ends. Valve describes those as possible uses, not a guarantee that every seasonal challenge will return—or that players who miss one will get another chance. Achievement hunting has always had enough chores without adding a calendar invitation.
A handful of games already support sets, according to Valve: American Truck Simulator, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Euro Truck Simulator 2, LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and PowerWash Simulator 2. The feature depends on developer support, so existing games won’t automatically have their achievements reorganized just because Steam has added the option.
Valve is refreshing Steam’s Achievements page alongside the new feature. The updated page will show a summary of overall progress, progress within each set, and details about individual achievements. That gives the system a clearer view of what a player has done without changing the basic bargain: play the game, unlock the achievement, and enjoy the small digital badge that says you were there.
The new achievements features are available in the latest Steam client beta, Valve says. The company hasn’t provided a general release date in the information available here. For now, achievement sets are a tidier framework rather than a reinvention of Steam gaming—and, refreshingly, Valve isn’t pretending that sorting a checklist counts as a revolution. It’s just making the checklist less of a mess.
